The Lord’s Prayer

By Rex Goode

Today in church I will be singing The Lord’s Prayer, a musical setting of from Matthew 6:9-13 composed by Albert Hay Malotte. Because I’m basically a basso profundo, I will be singing it in the key of G major. This is the most famous piece of Albert Hay Malotte, whose compositions ranged from sacred pieces like this to Disney film music like the score for Pinocchio, from ballet to The Swashbuckler’s song. For all that he did, he will probably be most remembered for The Lord’s Prayer.

Hay’s version has been performed by many well-known artists, including The Mormon Tabernacle Choir, Michael W. Smith, Mario Lanza, Patti LaBell, Andrea Bocelli, Connie Francis, Mahalia Jackson, Cristy Lane, Ann Murray, The Statler Brothers, Jim Reeves, Il Divo, Charlotte Church, Barbara Streisand, Sandi Patty, Perry Como, Andy Williams, LeeAnn Rimes, Aaron Neville, and in a duet of Gladys Knight and Johnny Mathis.

I guess I’ll be in good company. The only ones who sang it as low as I will were Ann Murray and Harold Reid of The Statler Brothers. Well, Harold sang it even lower than I will. I could match him, but I don’t have an arrangement that low.

I will be accompanied by Kristine Evans Lyman. She is so good. I’m amazed at how she picks up a piece of music and just plays it.

At Mormon church services, it is generally not considered appropriate to video tape portions of it, so I won’t be able to show you. That’s a good thing, because if I really mess it up, I can still pretend I did OK. So, you probably won’t see this before

I would love to have been there to hear it. It’s one of my favorite pieces. Some time we have to get together again to do “But Who May Abide…” I’m sure it went over well.

Thanks, Eric. I would love to sing that. My voice teacher back when I could afford one worked a little on “But Who May Abide” with me, but I was not really up to doing it. I’ll need a lot of work. I used to be able to sing it fairly well, but I’ve gone down hill with old age and overeating. šŸ™‚
