My work, my ideas, my faith, my life

OOP’s! Did I do that?!

Perhaps I should explain why I was so in love with C++. Well, it was just so good to be around it. It made me feel good. The world made sense in its presence. Be the first to like. Like Unlike

Torn Between Two Lovers

My layoff from Volt Energy Systems when the Portland office was closed down left me unemployed in an economy that was floundering. I tried my hand at consulting, but I’m just not good at marketing. If I wanted to be a salesman, I would have been a salesman. I’m much happier being a nerd. 2 […]

Adult Programming

My first paying job was teaching programming classes at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) to children and adults. This was back when it was located next to the zoo in Washington Park. I made only minimum wage, but really enjoyed it. There was such a marked difference between teaching adults and children. […]

A Nerd Is Born!

When I graduated high school, I ended up in various jobs: flipping burgers, folding linen at a hotel, warehousing, and working in a plasma donor facility spinning blood in a centrifuge. It was at the Fred Meyer warehouse in Clackamas, Oregon, that I had a back injury that set my life in a different direction, […]

Back to the BASIC

When I was 12, I lived in Flagstaff, Arizona. It was a college town. We lived first on the west side and I went to Marshall Elementary. That would have been around 1968. One of my classmates was a particularly cerebral young man whose father worked at Lowell Observatory on the hills above the town. […]

A Day in the Life

As anyone who knows me well will attest, I like spicy food. I write about it in “Some Like It Hot“. I guess that if variety is the spice of life, then my days and work are also very spicy.

Mailman

I host my websites through jumpline.com and have been generally happy with their service. They respond quickly and helpfully to support requests. I have no real complaints. One area that has been a problem that has not been solved is related to the many mailing lists I host. Be the first to like. Like Unlike

My Postscript Mentor Business Card

In addition to software engineering, I mentor developmentally disabled adults in life skills. I teach various sills related to community living and being included in community activities. I developed a business card to give to agencies and clients that outlined some of the things I teach. 1 person likes this post. Like Unlike

I Solved My Full Disk Problems

Every few days, I would get a notice on my desktop that my disk was too full and I had to clean itĀ up. I run Windows XP Professional. I would allow it to use the clean up utility, which would solve it for a little while. The annoying little pop up started happening more and […]

Software Engineer

In 1980, I was working at a warehouse job. I went out to the dock to receive a case of cash register tape. I was standing on the dock and a truck driver was handing it up to me from the ground level. I felt a twinge in my back, but continued working the rest […]
